"Zodiac" – Theta/Koschei (571 words)

Two young Gallifreyan boys stared up at the midnight inky-blue sky, it was finally late enough at night that the usual scarlet hue of the atmosphere had dimmed so much the vast blackness of space filtered through with a slightly blue tone as it did everywhere across the universe.

"On Earth," one of the boys began, "they say man has looked to the stars since time began."

The other boy pretended to sound interested, "Really?" He almost managed to avoid sarcasm. Almost.

But in the first boy paid him no heed, "They're fascinating, the stars, aren't they?  So many planets and people and lives… oh I wish we could go see them Kos."

Kos sighed, and there he had to agree, "Yeah I know…" he sighed, "Just a few more years and we'll be out of here without looking back," Kos grinned grimly, remorseless in leaving.

The first boy pouted a bit, upset by his friend's callousness, but when he really thought about it, he wouldn't miss this place much either. After all, the one good thing about it was coming with him when he left, "Yes, I guess you're right," he sighed too. He rolled over, almost on top of his companion, playing with the red blades of grass, "Y'know on Earth, they have a zodiac of their constellations."

'They have a what?" Kos blinked incredulously, staring down at his friend.

"A zodiac," he repeated, "A constellation for every month of their year… twelve if I remember right. And they use the positions of the stars and their relationship to the moon and sun to tell fortunes and things…"

Kos interrupted him with a harsh bark of laughter, "Theta, you know those primitive apes don't know science from mythology, they can't predict tomorrow's WEATHER from the arrangement of the stars, much less people's fortunes."

Theta pouted, but continued anyway, "Well I think it's creative.  Y'see they've given each constellation different attributes, like passion and organization and things like that, and they each have elements and parts of the body attached to them… oh they're wonderfully imaginative those humans," Theta sighed fondly.

Kos just rolled his eyes, "And I suppose they determine soul mates and all from this too, don't they?"

"Yes," Theta stated defiantly, "and they're always true," he blurted out before he could stop himself.  He just wanted Koschei to stop criticizing the things he loved so much. He knew Kos didn't give two shakes for humans, but he didn't have to be so negative about them all the time.

Koschei looked up skeptically, "Really?" he sat up studying him thoughtfully, "And… what constellations would we have, if we lived on your precious Earth?" He knew Theta wouldn't wonder why he was suddenly so interested, knew his trusting, benign best friend never saw darker motives in anyone, and therefore knew for a fact Theta would never make the connection that Kos had only asked to find out that, if on Earth, they would be considered soul mates… as he was strongly suspecting they were.

Theta grinned brightly up at him and began babbling incessantly about converting Gallifreyan years to Earth years then trying to divide it up into months to know which cycle they were each born under and Kos really didn't pay much attention, but it was enough to see Theta's face light up and wonder if maybe hidden somewhere deep down, he knew they were soul mates too.
